A question from Maria Renteria, Robert Day, Monica Moorman, and Elizabeth Murphy
Q: We learned some differences between the east and the west of Japan (e.g., Tokyo vs. Osaka). In your opinion, how is eastern Japan different from western Japan?
There are many differences between the east and the west of Japan. First, one of the differences is dialect. People in the eastern part of Japan use Kanto dialect, and people in the western part of Japan use Kansai dialect. For example, the end of sentence is different. People say "~dayone" in Kanto dialect, and we say "~yade" in Kansai dialect.
We think that people living in the west of Japan are very friendly.
There is Disney Land near Tokyo, and there is Universal Studio Japan in Osaka. Both of the amusement parks are very fun, but we think Disney Land is better than Universal Studio Japan.
One of my friends just attended a job fair for Japanese companies in Boston where he noticed something he found strange. The Japanese would stand on the right side of the escalator and pass on the left, so I commented "they must be from Osaka."

ReplyDeleteDo you have different traditions, such as things that you do at New Year's or on other important times of the year?
