A question from Rodrigo Haraguchi, Courtney Burke, Calvin Boetto, Joseph Radler, and Yehsil Byun

Q: Honne and tatemae traits would be considered deceitful in the U.S. How are these traits visible in your community and what do you think about it?

This question is very difficult for us.
Tatemae is natural in Japan because tatemae is necessary for our community. Honne is what we really think or feel, and tatemae is what we say on purpose and lip service. Honne is different from tatemae. We often use tatemae to avoid hurting others.

  2. I guess Honne and Tatemae exists in America and in other countries as well. It's just that the concept of honne and tatemae are not part of its culture to be emphasised as strongly as in Japan.

  3. How conscious are you that you are using honne or tatemae? Do you have any questions for us? We'd be happy to answer any questions you have.

  4. You use tatemae to avoid hurting others, but do people sometimes misunderstand what you are saying? Have you ever hurt anyone by using tatemae?
